        When you feel your child is ready, encourage him to sit on the toilet at regular
         intervals. When successes occur praise him.

        A more structured approach has been presented by Azrin and Foxx in "Toilet
        Training in Less Than a Day". This is summarized below.

        Feel free to try this method. If there is hesitation or resistance, please relax and
        wait for your child to be ready.

^ AGES: Best suited for children 20-24 months or older.

        TEACHING AIDS: A doll that wets, a potty chair, several pair of loosely fitting
        training pants, plus a variety of tasty drinks and candies.

^ PROCEDURE: Through imitation learning, the child can learn the actions
        involved in proper toileting and the social approval that can be expected for

           these actions.

<•1 1. Doll that wets:

              a. Guide the child as he takes the doll through the actions of proper
                     toileting (going to the bathroom, removing pants, etc.).

« b. When the doll goes to the bathroom on the potty, this should be pointed
                     out to the child and the child should be told to express approval to the

                          doll.

m c. After the doll is finished, the child should assist it in raising it's pants
                     and in emptying the potty chair.

              d. The child should be instructed to ask the doll if its pants are dry and
m check. Since they are, he should give approval to the doll and offer a

                    treat. The child should then check his own pants and if they are dry, he
                     may eat the doll's treat. This procedure should be repeated three
                     times, a couple of minutes apart, using drinks as treats.
PH, e. Wet the doll's pants. Have the child inspect and then tell the child to
                     disapprove and then run the doll through the steps for proper toileting,
                     while "telling" the doll the correct procedure. Have the child repeat
                     these practice trials three times. Have the child check his own pants,
_ contrast them to the doll's wet pants and receive praise and a snack
  ' (the doll demonstrations should be continued until the child shows an
                     understanding of all the actions involved in proper toileting).

        2. Prompted potty trials:
        The child is instructed to go through all of the actions he took the doll through.

               a. These trials should be given frequently at the start of training (15
                    minutes apart) and decrease in frequency as the child progresses
                     through training.
