p. Impetigo
Impetigo is a superficial skin infection caused by a bacteria. It can spread to
other parts of the body as well as to other people. It first appears as a small
pimple which progresses to small blisters. These blisters break and become
crusty and weepy. To help prevent spreading, wash the area 4 times daily with
soap and water. Soak and remove any crust with a washcloth. Then apply an
antibiotic ointment such as Bacitracin or Neosporin. Wash your hands after the
treatment to prevent further spreading. Use a fresh washcloth each time.
Continue this for three days after the sores have healed to prevent reinfection. If
the sores do not start healing within 3 to 4 days or are spreading to other areas,
contact our office during regular hours.
Q. Poison Ivy
Poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac cause the same type of rash. Many
people are sensitive to the oil from these plants. The rash caused by these
plants erupts on exposed body surfaces and is red and blistered. It may appear
as streaks or patches and is extremely itchy. Usually the rash begins within 1-2
days of exposure.
The rash from poison ivy will usually last for 2 weeks. Treatment is aimed at
decreasing discomfort but will not cure the rash. Prevention is the best
approach.
Prevention:
• Help your child learn to recognize these plants. Avoid all plants with 3
leaves. Black shiny spots on damaged poison ivy leaves are the sap
that has been exposed to air.
• Wear long pants or socks when walking or working in an area that may
contain these plants.
• If you think that your child has been in contact with poison ivy wash the
exposed areas of skin with any soap within an hour of exposure if
possible.
• The fluid from the sores does not spread poison ivy. Only the oil from
the plant can do that. Poison ivy can be contracted from the oil on
shoes, clothing, and pets.
Home Care:
• Cool soaks - soak area in cold water or massage with an ice cube for
20 minutes as often as necessary. Then let it air-dry. This will reduce
itching and oozing.
• Applying over the counter cortisone cream will help to reduce the
itching.
• There are many anti-itch creams such as Calamine Lotion and Aveeno
that can be used. Do not apply on top of cortisone cream.
• Aveeno Oatmeal or baking soda in bath water will give short term relief.
• Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may be given orally every 6 hours as
needed for itchiness.
