Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care

Benjamin Spook, M.D., Stephen Parker (Pocket Books 7**^ edition June

1998)
Thirty million copies of this book have been sold since its first publication in
1945, a record that is second only to the Bible. Spock's methods of parenting
are tried and true and have withstood the test of time. He has also spoken out
against those methods that don't work (i.e. spanking). A strong theme
throughout his book is that we must use some methods to maintain order so that
we can conserve the energy, both physical and psychologic, to be effective
parents. Being able to set boundaries and limits and to be consistent about

them benefits both us and our children. It is an excellent reference book with an
extensive index.

The major problem with Spock's book is that it's chock full of his philosophy and
opinions. It is not as easy to follow as other major parenting books. Also, Dr.
Spook spends many pages discussing so much about what parents do wrong, I

often find myself asking, "How, exactly, are we suppose to do it right?" Ifyou

want a more positive approach that doesn't dampen the thrill of being a new
parent with the harsh realities of all that can go wrong, try one of the other

books.
